January 2022 Report

It has been warm. It has been cold. Good ol’ Ozark weather. We just had our first bit of snow a couple days ago, but most of it has melted off at this point. Crowds on the river have been low, but the fishing has been the complete opposite. The bite has been on fire with eggs. With many of our browns transitioning into full blown spawn mode, now is the time of year to pull up those drag chains and keep from disrupting the river bed. We have had an array of water conditions. With Bull Shoals lake teetering around the top of the power pool (659 feet above sea level), most generation has been strictly for power demand. In the big flows, streamer fishing can produce some quality browns, but deep nymphing has been the best overall technique for both quality and quantity of browns and rainbows right now. Nonetheless, pick your poison, and you’ll probably have water flows sometime during the day that fit your desires. During periods of heavier releases, the water is getting pretty dirty and has a browner tint to it. This is partly due to the lake turning over a bit. The fish don’t seem to care, just put on a little big bigger and brighter egg or a flashier, higher contrast streamer, and you should be good to go. Don’t over think things this time of year. They’re eating a little bit of everything which makes it so much fun. Did I mention the crowds are low? Many clients love this time of year, and are probably cringing as they read this knowing it could possibly let the cat out of the bag on the great winter fishing we have.
